Agreed.  I think pre-5.6 should go, but I'm also slightly attached to the fact that we managed to make this run with that.

However, I would like lexical warnings, 3 argument open, our variables, POSIX character classes and other goodies.

However, if we don't go this route, I won't cry myself to sleep, either.
