If you have a TestDrive account you can dump your login details into  
~/.testdriverc and then do something like

$ perl smoke/testdrive.pl Test-Harness-2.99_08.tar.gz

and it'll upload the dist to the TestDrive box, run the tests, dump  
the results into misc/vms/tp_vms-maketest and to the console.

Should be pretty simple to integrate it into the smoke script I think.  
It could also be  more general - but it works for now.
